Ethos

Founded in 2016 by Georgie White and Alex Winter, Hewing Wittare began as a platform to support emerging artists and create experimental, accessible exhibitions in places where creative opportunity was becoming harder to sustain.

Our early work championed underrepresented voices — particularly women artists — and focused on sustainable, low-impact exhibitions that could be experienced by everyone, not just the traditional art world. Those values still sit at the heart of what we do.

As we have grown into a Community Interest Company, our ethos has evolved in response to the needs of our community. Today, Hewing Wittare CIC brings together creativity, play and local pride through programmes such as Offbeat Dursley with the Offbeat Collective and Let’s Create Through Play. We now work with families, traders, schools, Pride, youth groups and local makers to co-create experiences that build confidence, connection and belonging.

Across all our work, our beliefs remain the same:

  • Creativity belongs to everyone

  • Community-led ideas make the strongest projects

  • Artists deserve fair pay and meaningful platforms

  • Sustainability matters — in materials, relationships and opportunity

  • Art and play are powerful tools for wellbeing, confidence and connection

We continue to collaborate with local organisations, creative practitioners and community members who care deeply about the future of our area. Hewing Wittare remains a home for emerging artists — and now, a home for emerging ideas, emerging communities, and emerging possibilities.
